Hurricane Milton Impact on UCF vs. Cincinnati: Latest Updates

play

UCF and Cincinnati are scheduled to play a key Big 12 college football game in Orlando, Florida, on Saturday, but the impending arrival of Hurricane Milton could lead to a change of plans.

Currently classified as a Category 4 storm in the Gulf of Mexico, Hurricane Milton is expected to make landfall near the Tampa and/or St. Petersburg areas of Florida by Wednesday evening. Experts warn there could be winds of more than 120 miles per hour, massive storm surges and flying debris still left over from the damage caused by Hurricane Helene less than two weeks ago.

College football teams in Florida are preparing for what could be devastating to the region. The athletics calendar could also fall victim to the storm. UCF has already postponed several track and field events in anticipation of Hurricane Milton. The university issued a new scheduling notice on Wednesday that also included an update on the situation with the UCF football team.

Latest updates on Hurricane Milton

Other sports teams in Florida have already changed their precautions given the expected direction of the storm.

The NFL's Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning left this week to hold their practices elsewhere. The Bucs traveled early to New Orleans, where they are scheduled to play the Saints, and the Lightning traveled early to Raleigh, N.C., before their season opener against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday.

USF's scheduled home game against Memphis was also postponed from Friday night to Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. ET, but USF coach Alex Golesh said that will be reassessed Thursday after the Storm makes landfall.

Should Hurricane Milton make landfall as a Category 3 storm, as forecasters are currently predicting, that would mean winds of up to 129 miles per hour. More than a dozen Florida counties issued mandatory evacuation orders before Wednesday.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
