How Leila George perfected the role of Cate Blanchett in Disclaimer

We met with actors Leila George and Louis Partridge as her acclaimed new miniseries Disclaimer began streaming on Apple TV+. From masterful director Alfonso Cuarón, it's a twisted, star-studded ensemble led by Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, whose journalistic protagonist must confront her past as certain long-lost events resurface in more ways than one come. The role of young Blanchett in a series of gripping flashbacks is played by Australian actress Leila George (wildlife).

“I would have liked to have spent more time watching (Cate) and accompanying her on set, but unfortunately I came to the project very late and she was just finishing up when I started, so I had about a day to do the crossover to rehearse,” George told MovieWeb, adding:

“We all worked through some scenes together, some of the bigger, more important scenes, just so we could do it.”
See what her vision was for those scenes and I could see some little mannerisms that she did and, you know, what attitude she had
and things like that, because she created such a fully developed, incredible character in it. And yes, fortunately I was able to see her for about half a day.”

“Mostly I just relied on Alfonso's guidance to sprinkle things in here and there and discuss how much of her 'in the past' we wanted to remain like her 'in the future',” George continued. “And I also worked with a great dialect coach, William Conacher I think that same sound was a really useful anchor for the past and the present.”

Shooting these difficult scenes with “confidence”.

Disclaimer is told in seven chapters and is based on the novel of the same name by Renée Knight. Acclaimed journalist Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett) built her reputation by exposing the misdeeds and transgressions of others. When she receives a novel by an unknown author, she is horrified to discover that she is now the main character in a story that will reveal her darkest secrets. As Catherine attempts to uncover the writer's true identity, she must confront her past before it destroys both her own life and her relationships with her husband Robert (Sacha Baron Cohen) and son Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee).

George was paired with Disclaimer co-star Louis Partridge for our interview, and viewers will ultimately understand the significance of this pairing as their characters share some of the series' most groundbreaking and shocking moments. Partridge spoke about how they were able to pull off such emotionally intense scenes behind the scenes:

“I think trust is the right word… That's kind of the foundation of everything. If we didn't trust each other, if we didn't have the same goals in mind, it would have been very difficult.” But I felt like I trusted (Leila) and yes, we were pretty open about the journey .
We had these scenes to shoot and I think we just tried to joke about them and make light of them wherever possible
.”

Leila George echoed much of what Partidge had said about her trial. “The most important thing was that we felt comfortable with each other“And luckily we had already been working together for a few weeks by the time we were able to film these scenes, so we still had time to connect,” she said. And Louis was just so respectful and sensitive. Everyone was. I think if the atmosphere you're in is respectful and sensitive to the subject and what you're doing, then everything else is easy from there.” Disclaimer is now streaming on Apple TV+.
