PGA of America Director Defends Record-High Ryder Cup Prizes at Bethpage Black: 'Tier 1 Event'

Recently, the Ryder Cup prizes were announced and golf fans around the world were immediately put off.

A few weeks ago, the volunteer price was nearly $400, much higher than previous team events in the country and even the PGA Championship at Bethpage Black in 2019.

Well, those who want to attend might want to look into volunteering (that'll give you access to all rounds), as a single day ticket to next year's tournament on Long Island costs $750.

The awards were heavily criticized by prominent members of the golf media, including Barstool's “Fore Play” podcast and former member Dan Rapaport.

But the Ryder Cup is certainly a premiere event, even as his European team was slaughtered at Whistling Straits in 2021, Rory McIlroy called it “the best” event in golf, “unsurpassed”.

And that's the PGA of America's defense of pricing.

“We view ourselves as a Tier 1 event, on par with a World Series or an NBA Finals Game 7, that was part of it,” Bryan Karns, director of the PGA of America Championship, told PGA Tour Radio. “When we look at pricing, we can use data from all these different venues. Our partner Delaware North operates the Boston Bruins, Boston Celtics and Lambeau Field. “We can see what people are paying,” which is what really pushed that forward. And again, our position in this landscape, where do we see ourselves, I think that's the reality.

“There are people who have the Ryder Cup on their bucket list just as someone would have the Yankees' opening game of the World Series on their bucket list. Ultimately we felt like we were there. “We have a lot of people.” Demand for this event is at an all-time high, so we wanted to make sure the price was reasonable.”

The price is more than double that of the 2021 tournament, where a day ticket cost $350. New York residents can even play Bethpage Black for just $80 (though you may have to camp overnight). Of course, if you travel to New York, you also have to pay high hotel fees.

Europe has not won a Ryder Cup on U.S. soil since the Miracle in Medinah in 2012. In fact, this was the last time the road team won the tournament.
