LIVE: Israeli body tests DNA to determine if Yahya Sinwar was killed; no Hamas comment | Israel attacks Lebanon news

Al Jazeera reports from Jordan because it has been banned from Israel and the occupied West Bank.

We now learn more through leaks in the Israeli media. An incident occurred in which the Israeli army identified three gunmen in Tal as-Sultan, an area in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

They attacked and killed these three gunmen, and only then did they suspect that one of these fighters was actually Yahya Sinwar. According to some reports, the body was returned to Israel.

It is now in Jerusalem to conduct DNA tests to confirm the identity of this fighter. There are strong indications, at least in the Israeli media, that it is Yahya Sinwar.

But – this is very important to point out – we have no official confirmation from the Israeli side and no news from Hamas yet. Until we hear from them, we cannot confirm with certainty that this assassination attempt actually took place or was successful.

We can also inform you that the Israeli Prime Minister has asked his military secretary to contact the families of the Israeli prisoners and inform them that the prisoners were not in the vicinity of the shooting at the time of the shooting.

And that's really important because it reminds everyone that now, if this assassination attempt is confirmed, the fate of the Israeli prisoners remaining in Gaza, many of whom are still alive, may be even more in doubt.

Who will the Israelis talk to? Who will the mediators try to reach an agreement with? This is the second time Israel has targeted Hamas' top leader while it is still trying to reach a deal to release Israeli prisoners held in Gaza.
