Pete Wehner, a former speechwriter for Ronald Reagan, George HW Bush and George W. Bush, wrote on X that Kamala Harris “dominated” Fox News host Bret Baier during an interview on Wednesday.

“My opinion: Bret Baier has rarely looked as bad (or tendentious) as he did in his interview with Kamala Harris,” Wehner wrote on X. “On the other hand, this was one of her best interviews. Harris and Baier exchanged combative arguments for 30 minutes in their first formal interview on the right-wing network as they addressed conservative or independent voters in the final weeks of the election. Baier asked her about the Biden administration's handling of immigration, the Middle East and the economy.

The exchange became particularly heated on topics such as immigration. Baier repeatedly pressed Harris for the Biden administration's reversal of restrictive Trump-era policies, to which she responded by accusing Republicans of blocking a bipartisan immigration bill that Trump encouraged senators to reject in February.

When Harris talked about the economy and Biden's record, he pushed back and called on Baier to have a “conversation based on a full assessment of the facts.”

At one point, as Harris described Trump recently saying he would use the military against the political left, which he called “the enemy within,” Baier shot footage of Trump calling the backlash to those comments excessive . In the clip, Trump accused Democrats of threatening him with “false investigations” and “weaponizing the government.”

Trump's first controversial statement, which he responded to in Baier's clip, was when he was asked if he thought Election Day would be peaceful. He said: “I think the bigger problem is the enemy from within… We have some very bad people, some sick people, radical left-wing lunatics. And it should be handled very easily by the National Guard if necessary, or by the military if really necessary.”

Harris pushed back, blaming Baier for selectively downplaying the clip of Trump defending his comments rather than addressing the comments themselves. She said this would tone down or sanitize Trump's calls for violence.
