Meta lays off employees in several teams

Several teams at Meta were affected by layoffs on Wednesday, the company confirmed in a statement to TechCrunch, noting that these changes were made to reallocate resources within the company.

“Today, some teams at Meta are making changes to ensure resources are aligned with their long-term strategic goals and site strategy,” a Meta spokesperson said in an emailed statement. “This includes moving some teams to other locations and moving some employees to other roles. In situations like this where a position is eliminated, we work hard to find other opportunities for the affected employees.”

According to The Verge, employees at Reality Labs, Instagram and WhatsApp were affected by the layoffs.

One of the employees affected by Wednesday's firing is Jane Manchun Wong, a software engineer who was hired to join the Threads team in 2023 after she became known for revealing unannounced features for meta apps. At the time, her appointment was celebrated by Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth and Instagram head Adam Mosseri.

Other former Meta employees also took to social media to announce their firing. Employees who previously worked at Facebook in recruiting, legal and design said in social media posts viewed by TechCrunch on Wednesday that they had been laid off.

A Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch that the threads, recruiting and legal departments were not affected by the restructuring and there were no layoffs there. Meta declined to comment on the filing about how many employees were affected and which organizations they belonged to.

A former Meta employee who worked at one of these organizations tells TechCrunch that some employees were offered other positions as part of new contracts or were told they could take severance instead. According to the source, several accepted the severance package.

The former employee tells TechCrunch that more than a dozen people on her team were informed via video call on Wednesday that their roles were affected. According to the former Meta employee, some affected employees received six weeks of severance pay on Wednesday. (The employee spoke to TechCrunch on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.)

In recent years, Meta has laid off a large portion of its workforce as it looks to downsize the company following an aggressive pandemic shutdown. In 2022, Meta laid off around 13% of its workforce, or 11,000 employees, for which CEO Mark Zuckerberg took personal responsibility. In 2023, Meta laid off an additional 10,000 employees and retired 5,000 open positions that had not yet been filled.

Correction: An earlier version of this story indicated that threads, recruiting and legal operations were part of Wednesday's meta reorganization. Meta clarified that these organizations were not part of the restructuring.
