Wave loses starting goalkeeper, game as Club América advances in Concacaf W Champions Cup – San Diego Union-Tribune

The San Diego Wave and Club América Femenil met for the second time in three months on Wednesday, and this time the hosts were at full strength.

The wave started with Jaedyn Shaw, Naomi Girma, Delphine Cascarino and Kailen Sheridan – all playing in the Olympics when the Mexican visitors beat San Diego in late July.

Only three of them finished Wednesday's game.

Sheridan received a red card in the 22nd minute and San Diego had to play out the remainder of a 1-0 loss at Snapdragon Stadium with just 10 players.

Club América's Sarah Luebbert scored a goal in the 58th minute as the visitors won the final game of the Concacaf W Champions Cup group stage. Club América and the Portland Thorns of the National Women's Soccer League advance from Group B to the knockout stages of the international tournament scheduled to take place next spring. With a win the wave would have moved on.

Sheridan received a red card after appearing to trip a Club América player on a counterattack, denying her passage to the open goal.

Hillary Beall replaced Sheridan in goal and forward Mya Jones was removed from the game, forcing San Diego to play shorthanded.

The Wave kept Club América at bay for another 35 minutes before Kiana Palacios headed a pass toward Beall in the penalty area. The header bounced in front of Beall, who appeared to slip. Instead of intercepting the miss, the goalkeeper batted it away and Luebbert – an American who played collegiately at Missouri – sank the game-winning goal.

San Diego will resume NWSL play on Saturday with a game at the Kansas City Current before concluding its regular season on Nov. 3 with a game against Racing Louisville. The Wave are not yet eliminated from NWSL playoff contention, but must prevail and hold on to qualify.
