Kamala Harris defends economic plan in Testy Fox News interview

  • Kamala Harris took part in a live interview with Fox News. It was heated.
  • Moderator Bret Baier pressed Harris on a poll in which respondents said the U.S. was on the wrong track.
  • Harris announced her economic plans and said her presidency was not a continuation of Joe Biden's.

Kamala Harris met Fox News host Bret Baier on Wednesday – and things quickly got exciting.

Baier pressed Harris on the policies he accused Joe Biden's administration of, sharply criticizing border security and pointing to a recent poll in which nearly 80% of respondents said the U.S. is on the wrong track.

If so many people think things aren't going well, why would they vote for you, Baier asked Harris, considering she was Joe Biden's vice president for nearly four years.

Harris shot back, trying to shift the focus to Donald Trump. She said he has spent the last decade dividing the country – and said a Harris presidency “will not be a continuation of Joe Biden's presidency.”

Harris said her ideas would strengthen the economy and emphasized what was common in her speech: a plan to strengthen small businesses, mentor young parents and promote affordable housing.

“People are ready to chart a new path forward, and they want a president who has a plan for the future and a plan that is solid and will strengthen our country,” Harris said. “My plan for the economy does just that.”

Harris said Trump's economic plan will “fuel inflation” and lead to a recession by the middle of next year. “These are the facts,” she said, pointing to 16 Nobel laureates who she said supported her plans.

Baier, who hosts “Special Report with Bret Baier,” again cited the poll and pressed Harris to explain how she would differ from Biden. “What would be the biggest changes under a Harris administration and what would stay the same?” he asked.

“Well, I mean, I’m obviously not Joe Biden, and that would be a change,” Harris retorted. “But I think it’s also important to say that with 20 days to go, I’m not Donald Trump.”

The poll was the Marquette Law School poll conducted earlier this month and released Wednesday. 79% of respondents said the country was on the wrong track.

Still, the presidential election stalled in the same poll, with 48% of likely voters choosing Harris and 47% choosing Trump. 886 registered voters nationwide were surveyed.

Meanwhile, Baier Harris asked about the US border with Mexico: “How many illegal immigrants would you estimate your administration has released into the country in the last 3.5 years?” he asked.

Harris did not answer the question directly. She said Democrats and Republicans had been working on a bill to address the issue, but Trump had ordered Republicans to vote against it, dooming the measure.
