A mass shooting in Birmingham left four people dead and 17 injured

By MK Bryant and Drew Taylor, CBS 42 News

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – An arrest has been made following a mass shooting that left several people dead and many more injured in downtown Birmingham last month.

Police were at the scene of the mass shooting in Five Points South on Saturday evening.

As CBS 42's MK Bryant and Drew Taylor reported, Birmingham Police Chief Scott Thurmond announced the arrest of 22-year-old Damien McDaniel, who has been charged with murder and 17 counts of attempted murder, during a press conference Wednesday.

McDaniel's arrest is in connection with a mass shooting outside the Hush Lounge on September 21st. Four people were killed and 17 others were injured in the shooting.

McDaniel was also charged with another murder the day before and another the day after the Hush shooting, bringing the total number of victims to six.

“We have received over 300 tips between crime fighters and our QR code,” Thurmond said. “They were all extremely helpful. As I said, the investigation is still ongoing.”

It is unknown whether other suspects were involved in or under investigation in the Hush mass shooting.

“As you have seen, it has taken over three and a half weeks for us to get to this point with these cases,” Thurmond said. “An enormous amount of male and female power was put into these investigations. This is just a step forward.”

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin released the following statement after the press conference:

“After the horrific shooting in Five Points South, we vowed that our priority would be to find, capture and arrest every person responsible for this heinous and brazen mass shooting.

“We told you we would do this and we did.

“Today was a big step towards justice.

“Thank you to Police Chief Thurmond; Deputy Chief Brown and the Investigative Bureau; Deputy Chief Pickett and the Special Operations Bureau; the sheriff's office; Homicide detectives; our federal partners working around the clock to provide answers, closure and justice to grieving families; and every man and woman who wears the uniform and puts their lives on the line to protect us.

“But we’re not done yet. This investigation continues at BPD and we will not rest until our streets are safer.

“Violent criminals operating in Birmingham will be prosecuted INDEPENDENTLY and brought to justice promptly.

“Our commitment to rapid apprehensions and seamless coordination with local, state and federal partners, strengthened over the past two years, will help ensure these criminals are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law and ensure that crime does not continues to thrive in our city. Violent criminals know that BPD and our law enforcement partners will aggressively pursue them.

“We are committed to putting more police officers on the streets, working on legislation to take automatic weapons off the streets, and engaging our community in finding innovative ways to combat violent crime.” The people of Birmingham “We are pulling together to win this fight and we will do that.”
