Trump vows to 'end all sanctuary cities' and restore 'normalcy' at Faulkner Focus town hall with female voters

Former President Donald Trump vowed to abolish sanctuary cities and restore “normalcy” as he answered questions ahead of Election Day from voters concerned about a variety of issues, including the economy, crime and abortion.

A woman whose son attends the University of Georgia pressed him on the issue of crime and public safety following the killing of nursing student Laken Riley earlier this year during Wednesday's exclusive town hall on The Faulkner Focus.

“My son is a Georgia Bulldog. He was on campus the day Laken Riley was murdered,” the attendee told the former president. “Terrifying for all these kids, right? I wanted to know…how quickly can you eliminate the threats to our societies in a city of refuge – as Athens, Georgia calls them – that our children can flee as.” They should rightly be able to be alone in a daytime “Do something in the park?”

“We can do things to send people away. We can drive them out of the cities of refuge. We will abolish all sanctuary cities in the United States and return to normal,” he promised in response.

“And we will have law and order.”

Crime is consistently a top issue for Republican voters nationwide, second only to the economy, which polls show is the biggest motivator when voters go to the polls.

Recent polls showed former President Trump with a nine-point lead over Vice President Kamala Harris when it comes to handling the economy, the most important issue for voters ahead of the 2024 presidential election.

The Gallup poll found that 54% of Americans say Trump is better able to handle the economy, compared to 45% for Harris. The economy was ranked the most important issue for Republicans and all Americans, but not in the top five for Democrats.

A woman asked him about the rising cost of living for families and his plans for the child tax credit.

“I'm a single mother of two here, and in just three and a half years, my child's tax credit has dropped 80%,” one attendee told Trump. “Last year I broke my neck and tried to apply for any kind of assistance and was denied because I wasn't making less than $700 a month… what realistic changes do you think you can make Offer to single parents, married parents and any other parents who can easily afford it? Children in today’s world, with the way things are here?”

“I gave you the biggest tax cuts in the history of our country,” Trump replied. “Bigger than the Reagan cuts.” Bigger. I understand exactly what you are saying. We're going to readjust things so it's fair to everyone, because that's really not fair to everyone… We're going higher, but we're also going to readjust because you have to do some readjustments.”

“It’s unfair to some people and we won’t let that happen,” he continued.

Another town hall attendee, Pamela, who is originally from California, asked the former president about abortion, an issue that is among the most important to some women heading to the ballot box.

“Women have the right to do what they want and need with their bodies, including their unborn child. That's up to them, regardless of the circumstances. Some things are necessary to save their own lives,” she said. “Why is the government committed to women’s fundamental rights?”

“This issue has been tearing our country apart for 52 years,” Trump responded. “Every legal scholar, the big guys, every lawyer — except the Democrats, the Republicans, the liberals and the conservatives, they wanted it taken out of the federal government and brought back to the states for the people's vote. And like Ronald.” Reagan, I believe in the exceptions for rape, incest and the life of the mother.

“I am a firm believer in following your heart. Some people don't do that. It’s a very small percentage, but you have to follow your heart,” he continued. “But there are exceptions. But what we were able to achieve was thanks to the courage of six Supreme Court justices. We achieved this after many years of turmoil.”

Abortion is considered one of the top issues for Democrats ahead of Election Day, along with democracy, education and health care.

Trump also leads Harris on immigration (54%-45%) and foreign policy (52%-47%). However, Harris himself is in the lead on top Democratic issues, including health care (54%-44%), abortion (56%-40%) and climate change (61%-35%).
