Laura Dern has admitted she “felt so lucky” to be able to perform a racy sex scene with younger co-star Liam Hemsworth in her new film Lonely Planet.

In the romantic drama, which debuted on Netflix on October 11, Dern's character Katherine Loewe, a successful and respected writer, travels to a Moroccan resort to complete her latest literary novel – where she meets Hemsworth's character Owen Brophy.

Owen falls in love with Katherine even though he is at the retreat with his girlfriend Lily Kemp (played by Diana Silvers), and the two grow closer the more time they spend together.

In one particularly racy scene, the pair have sex against a wall and Dern, 57, revealed there was “definitely an intimacy coordinator” on set and said she felt so comfortable with her 34-year-old Australian co-star.

Describing Hemsworth as “literally the safest person I've ever been able to discuss anything in my life with,” Dern explained, “When we were filming those scenes, there was nothing we couldn't talk about together and work creatively and professionally . all that.

The actors had an intimacy coordinator on set for their fast-paced love scene in the Netflix film

“But we also had a lot of support, we discussed a lot, a lot,” the mother of two added during an interview with People.

Hemsworth also felt just as comfortable with his co-star, saying, “There were times when we were filming in the markets of Marrakech where we couldn't even see the camera… we were completely immersed in it.”

“The whole experience of filming was that it just felt like we were hanging out and it was being filmed at the same time,” he admitted.

“(We) didn’t know each other before,” revealed the 1.80 meter tall Australian heartthrob.

“It was strange. It felt like we had known each other for a long time and there was instant trust and connection.

“And as we worked together, it just grew and evolved.”

“We had so much fun doing this project together. And it was a really unexpected, wonderful surprise to work with someone who I was already such a big fan of and who is obviously an amazing, brilliant actress.”

Dern previously said of the film's narrative, “I love that the story focuses on connection and intimacy and feeling truly seen.”

He also noted that the Netflix romance “reminded me why I love making films,” explaining, “It's not just about the work itself, but the bonds you form with people with whom you share this journey.”

Lonely Planet is now available to stream on Netflix.
