Tucson starts the week hot, but cools down and rains on Friday

High temperatures in the Tucson metropolitan area will continue to be about eight to 12 degrees hotter than normal this week, but relief is possible by the weekend, the weather service said.

Temperatures here will return to near normal on Thursday and then fall to about 10 degrees below normal over the weekend, the National Weather Service in Tucson said Monday in its weekly forecast.

Tucson has been setting high temperature records for weeks. In fact, the record for most days in a year with at least 100 degrees was broken last week in 2024.

That should change on Friday.

On a recent triple-digit day, a cyclist rode along North Mountain Avenue near the University of Arizona. Tucson will continue to be hotter than normal this week, but a storm system moving into the area Friday is expected to bring cooler temperatures along with wind and possibly rain, the weather service says.

A cool weather system will move into southeastern Arizona on Friday, bringing windy conditions and the possibility of showers and thunderstorms, according to the weather service.

The greatest chance of storms will be Friday afternoon and evening.

The system will move out of the area on Saturday, but it will leave behind cooler temperatures, the forecast shows.

How cool? Expected highs for Tucson on Friday and Saturday are expected to be in the mid to upper 70s.

Winds could be worst near Willcox Playa in Cochise County on Friday, the weather service said. That means there's a risk that blowing dust could reduce visibility for drivers traveling on Interstate 10 in the Willcox area.

The weather system could also drop morning temperatures above 30 degrees in the valleys east of Tucson, especially on Sunday, the weather service said.
