'Grey's Anatomy' author who faked cancer speaks out

Elisabeth R. Finch, the former Grey's Anatomy The writer, who pretended to have cancer for years and even took breaks from work to vomit and shave her head, said Tuesday that she regrets her actions.

“The truth is, there is no excuse, no justification – nothing will ever make my lies okay for anyone,” Finch said on social media the day a three-part documentary about Finch was released Anatomy of liesbecame available on Peacock. “Nothing erases the trauma I caused – the fear, the pain, the anger, the tears, the time. And nothing is more important to me than holding myself accountable in every way. I'll continue to repair whatever damage I can and make sure I'm not the worst thing I've ever done. I realize that it will take time for people to believe that I will work and wait for so long.

Finch confessed to her plan in December 2022 after her story was revealed in reports and she parted ways with the ABC series. She admitted in her new statement that she had caused pain.

“I fell into an addiction to lying, betraying and traumatizing my closest family, friends and colleagues,” Finch said. “I am making amends and expressing my sincere regret as best I can if people are willing. And I have accepted the fact that some may never be. I have been receiving psychiatric treatment for almost three years and work hard every day to maintain a life where the truth is more important than anything else.

In her message, Finch also apologized and noted that it wasn't enough.

“I have never given anyone a reason to believe a word I say. I lied so much; Things that have devastated so many people in real life,” she said. “'I'm sorry' feels like the smallest words compared to what I did, but they are the truest.”

She said she fell in love with a woman and her five children, but that situation ended badly because she couldn't cope there either.

“The biggest mistake of my life (besides lying about cancer in the first place) was saying 'yes' to Jennifer's marriage proposal before I was honest with her,” Finch said.

As part of Anatomy of liesFinch's former colleague Andy Reaser explained that she put so much effort into lying about her health. (There were others.)

“It was like performance art,” he said. “She showed up to work with her head shaved and a, you know, greenish tint. She looked like she was living in a microwave. She ate those saltines, drank ginger ale, and went to the bathroom to take a puke break from her “chemo.”

Anatomy of lies is streaming on Peacock.
