Anatomy of a Series: Recap of Troy's 6 straight wins over South Alabama

A lot has changed since Troy lost – or South Alabama won – the “Battle of the Belt.”

Both programs have had three coaching changes since the Jaguars went 19-8 at Troy in 2017. South Alabama moved from Joey Jones to Steve Campbell and Kane Wommack to Major Applewhite, while the Trojans moved from Neal Brown to Chip Lindsey, Jon Sumrall to Gerad Parker.

Despite six straight losses to its in-state and Sun Belt Conference rival, South Alabama (2-4, 1-1 Sun Belt) is listed as a double-digit favorite over Troy (1-5, 1-2) when the teams meet on Tuesday night at Hancock Whitney Stadium in Mobile. The 2024 version of the game begins at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN2.

South Alabama and Troy split their first six meetings, but the last six were very one-sided. The Trojans have outscored the Jaguars 173-70 (average 28.8-11.7) since 2018 and have scored at least 28 points in all but one game; The Jaguars have only topped 17 points once during that span.

As teams prepare to start again, here is a recap of all six Troy wins during the series (some portion of the following was previously printed in 2022):

The final “Battle for the Belt” for Troy coach Neal Brown was hardly a contest as Sawyer Smith threw three touchdowns and ran for another at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Troy (6-2) led first-year coach Steve Campbell and South Alabama 16-7 after the first quarter and 31-10 midway through the second quarter. Jaguars quarterback Evan Orth threw for 275 yards and two touchdowns but was intercepted three times. BJ Smith ran for 170 yards and a touchdown for the Trojans, while Damion Willis caught five passes for 132 yards and two scores. Troy finished 10-3 and won the Dollar General Bowl again, while Brown left after the season to take the West Virginia job. South Alabama finished 3-9 and lost four straight games before picking up a season-ending win over Coastal Carolina.

2. Troy 37, South Alabama 13 (2019)

First-year coach Chip Lindsey's Trojans scored three second-half touchdowns to win their second straight Battle for the Belt at Veterans Memorial Stadium. Troy (3-3) ran for 220 yards, and Kaleb Barker threw for 194 yards and two touchdown passes to Kaylon Geiger. Will Sunderland's 29-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter nearly clinched the game. South Alabama (1-6) averaged just 2.8 yards per carry on the ground and turned the ball over three times. The loss was one of nine straight for the Jaguars, who beat Arkansas State 2-10 to end the season. Troy also lost four of its last six games and came home with a record of 5-7.

3. Troy 29, South Alabama 0 (2020)

The only shutout in the Battle for the Belt series came after the game was postponed from early October to early December due to a COVID outbreak on the South Alabama team. It also spelled the end for Campbell, who was fired the following day after the Jaguars finished 4-7 with losses in five of their last six games. Troy's Gunnar Watson threw for 297 yards and three touchdowns, all in the second quarter, as the Trojans (5-5) built a 27-0 halftime lead at Hancock Whitney Stadium. South Alabama managed just 239 yards on offense, including a paltry 57 on the ground. The Trojans' defense resulted in five total sacks and eight tackles. Troy lost 42-38 to Coastal Carolina the following week, finishing 5-6 and out of contention for the second straight year.

4. Troy 31, South Alabama 24 (2021)

This “battle for the belt” resulted in an injury in the first quarter when Jaguars quarterback Jake Bentley was sidelined with two torn knee ligaments while leading South Alabama to a game-opening score. Troy (5-4) took advantage and took a 31-10 lead at halftime after three touchdown runs and a pick-six from KJ Robertson. First-year coach Kane Wommack's Jaguars (5-4) got back into the game behind backup quarterback Desmond Trotter, who threw two touchdown passes to Terrion Avery and cut Troy's lead to 31-21 after three quarters. Diego Guajardo added a field goal in the fourth, but the Jaguars turned the ball over on downs on their final possession. South Alabama lost the next three games and finished the year 5-7. Troy lost its last three games and also finished 5-7, which led to Lindsey being fired despite three straight wins against the Jaguars.

5. Troy 10, South Alabama 6 (2022)

The lowest-scoring game in series history turned out to have the most at stake, as the Trojans cruised to a 4-point victory en route to the first of two straight Sun Belt championships. First-year coaches Jon Sumrall and Troy (6-2) won despite scoring just one touchdown – DK Billingsley's 5-yard run in the second quarter – and 1:12 left on third down. Brooks Buce's 51-yard field goal in the fourth quarter gave the Trojans a small lead after South Alabama (5-2) got within a point on the second of two Diego Guajardo field goals. With star running back La'Damian Webb running, the Jaguars only managed 31 yards. South Alabama also missed two big touchdown opportunities in the first half: a long pass from Carter Bradley to Brandon Crum was rejected on a hold and another pass to Devin Voisin was overturned on replay. The Jaguars hit the ball with 4:01 to play and the Trojans ran the ball for most of the rest of the game. Billingsley and Kimani Vidal combined for 150 yards on 36 carries for Troy. Troy finished one game ahead of South Alabama in the Sun Belt standings and defeated Coastal Carolina in the conference title game before capping a 12-2 season with a Cure Bowl victory over Texas-San Antonio. South Alabama finished a game-best 10-3 and lost to Western Kentucky in the New Orleans Bowl.

6. Troy 28, South Alabama 10 (2023)

South Alabama's Bradley was sidelined with a knee injury, forcing freshman Gio Lopez to make his first career start at quarterback. The Jaguars took an early 7-0 lead after Webb's 6-yard touchdown run, but Troy dominated the rest of the way. Gunnar Watson threw three long touchdown passes to Chris Lewis – of 47, 26 and 29 yards – and Vidal ran for 125 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown on fourth-and-goal with 3:12 to play in the game. The Trojans (7-2) limited the Jaguars (4-5) to just 254 total yards and kept South Alabama out of the end zone early in the fourth quarter to maintain the lead. The Jaguars kicked a field goal to get within 14-10 with 11:47 to play, but the Trojans went on a 16-play scoring drive, ending with a touchdown by Vidal that gave them a two-point lead. Troy captured its second straight Sun Belt West title, then defeated Appalachian State in the championship game before losing to Duke in the Birmingham Bowl, finishing 11-3. South Alabama won two of its final three games to earn a bowl berth and then defeated Eastern Michigan in the 68 Ventures Bowl for its first postseason win and a 7-6 final record. Both teams lost their coaches in the offseason, with Troys Sumrall taking the Tulane job and South Alabama's Kane Wommack moving to Alabama as defensive coordinator.
