Jets playoff ended after Davante Adams traded

play

The New York Jets have finally acquired standout receiver Davante Adams to reunite with Aaron Rodgers, and two words come to mind.

No, not “Super Bowl.” But how does “playoffbound” sound?

Sure, the Jets fell to 2-4 after their 23-20 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football. But then they acquired Adams from the Las Vegas Raiders on Tuesday, a week after firing coach Robert Saleh.

So the Jets will reach the postseason in 2024 – triggering USA TODAY Sports' NFL overreactions after Week 6. It might be difficult for overexcited Jets fans dealing with recent events to wrap their head around this notion, but it's time to get excited all over again .

If you thought the chemistry between Rodgers and Allen Lazard (another former Packers receiver with the Jets) was impressive in New York, you can only imagine how Rodgers will thrive again with Adams.

Rodgers and Adams reached the postseason six times with the Green Bay Packers, with four of those playoff games ending in the NFC Championship Game.

With a respectable defense and standout players like Breece Hall, Garrett Wilson and Lazard as its top weapons, the Jets could make the playoffs as a 2-4 team this season. At least one 2-4 team has made the playoffs in each of the last three seasons: the Patriots, Eagles and 49ers in 2021; the Jaguars in 2022; and the Packers last year.

But consider this: Of the 224 teams that started 2-4 between 1990 and 2023, only 24 teams (9.3%) made the playoffs, and none of them won the Super Bowl.

The Lions' Super Bowl chance was ruined by Aidan Hutchinson's injury

Aidan Hutchinson's broken leg was sad and cruel. The Detroit Lions' young defenseman was on his way to a breakout season worthy of NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors. And the Lions are considered early contenders for the Super Bowl.

However, any chances of Detroit winning the Super Bowl are virtually over after their season ends.

This is no insult to Dan Campbell and the Lions, who have taken Detroit from NFL laughing stock to one of the most exciting teams to watch. There will be multiple times where the Lions will need a crucial sack on defense to either swing a game in their favor or secure a victory. But their star defender, who will be one of the league's young faces in the coming years, will not be able to avoid being sidelined.

Hutchinson's loss certainly reopens the window on the NFC playoff picture.

The Ravens will remain undefeated for the remainder of the regular season

This is Baltimore's year. Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry are the best one-two punchers in the NFL. And the Ravens are on the rise after their fourth straight win, beating one of the league's best teams – yes, the Washington Commanders – last week.

Baltimore will be the favorite in every game going forward, and we'll overreact and say they finish 14-2 this season.

Sunday's game against the 5-1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers will be an enticing matchup. After that, only the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 13 and the Houston Texans in Week 17 are serious opponents. The Ravens are brave enough to earn victories in the AFC North against the Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as any other team on their schedule.

Baltimore has found its hobby and is playing complementary football. Jackson leads the offense, Henry punishes the opposing defense, and their defense takes care of the rest. And don't forget Justin Tucker, the best kicker in the league.

At the end of the season, Baltimore should be the No. 1 seed in the playoffs and have home field advantage. And they will be angry that they lost to the Chiefs and underestimated the Raiders in the first two weeks of the season.
