Emergency shelter order issued in Elizabeth amid 'increased police activity'

ELBERT COUNTY, Colo. — A protective order was issued in Elizabeth, with multiple law enforcement agencies responding to an accident, according to the city.

At approximately 9 a.m. Tuesday, the Elbert County Sheriff's Office and Elizabeth Police Department issued a protection order around 175 Spruce Street as police were on duty around the Fitzgerald Apartments. According to the City of Elizabeth's Facebook page, residents are asked to stay put until they receive an all-clear.

Those unable to shelter in place can come to Elizabeth Town Hall, located at 151 S. Banner St. City Hall is closed for business.

The Elbert County SWAT team was on scene.

“More information will be available, but as this is a fluid operation involving multiple law enforcement agencies, your cooperation is appreciated,” the city of Elizabeth wrote on Facebook.

Elizabeth Fire Rescue said the public should expect an increase in police activity on S. Elbert Street, which is now closed between Highway 86 and East Maple.

The Elizabeth School District is on fall break this week, so no local schools are affected by the police operations.

Elizabeth is a small town on Highway 86 about 13 miles east of Castle Rock.

A Denver7 team is on its way to the scene to find out more.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
