The Canaveral National Seashore in eastern Florida is closed until further notice to protect visitors following damage from Hurricane Milton.

The National Seashore, operated by the National Park Service, announced the closure on Facebook on Saturday. “Canaveral National Seashore was significantly impacted by Hurricane Milton on October 10,” the post said.

Hurricane Milton hit Florida's west coast on Wednesday evening. The storm swept through the state before exiting the East Coast. The storm brought strong wind gusts of 100 miles per hour and heavy rainfall, resulting in significant flooding.

Apollo and Playlinda beaches were affected by the closure as damage assessment continued throughout the weekend, the coast said.

In Playalinda, most of the boardwalks were damaged and needed to be repaired before the beach could be reopened, the coast said. Additionally, the beach experienced significant dune erosion and flooding.

Piles of sand from the storm were deposited on Playalinda Beach Road, the coast said. A flight over the coast revealed further sand flooding and breaches at Klondike Beach.

According to their website, Canveral National Seashore covers nearly 58,000 acres in Volusia and Brevard counties.

Dozens of Florida communities are still cleaning up the damage left by Milton, and some rivers in eastern Florida are still flooded after the torrential rains in Milton.

The Seashore has not announced a reopening date at this time.
