Florida gives out free gas in these cities

Florida residents hit by Hurricane Milton are still searching for gasoline in some hard-hit areas days later. Residents evacuating ahead of the storm or simply filling their homes created a shortage of supplies, but the state has worked hard to maintain supplies to the areas.

And in some of the hardest hit areas, they are offering free gas.

“Since fuel deliveries reopened following the storm, 2,500 trucks have been operating out of Port Tampa Bay to deliver fuel to the region,” Gov. Ron DeSantis said at a news conference in Port Manatee on Monday. “They unloaded a total of 5 million gallons of fuel from Port Tampa. That’s 2 million more than they would normally do in a similar period.”

“And then here in Manatee, and we'll say a little more about it, because they weren't supposed to do anything up until now, over 300,000 gallons and 60,000 gallons of diesel have been put in, and they're doing more than we're talking about,” he said. On the East Coast, Port Canaveral has used 12 million gallons since the storm, twice the usual amount, DeSantis said.

The governor pointed out that it is not up to the state where the gas is delivered — “it’s all private business” — but the Florida Highway Patrol and local law enforcement have helped deliver the gas.

“Over 100 tankers have been escorted by the Florida Highway Patrol alone since Milton reached land,” he said. “So I want to thank everyone for doing this.”

One way the state was able to help directly was by opening fuel depots and giving away gasoline in the areas affected by Milton.

“We actually opened our own gas stations over the weekend,” DeSantis said. “So today we have fuel for the public without charging you for free, free gas. Imagine that.”

“It helps to have a budget surplus,” he said.
