Sweden's judiciary has issued a statement – without naming Kylian Mbappe – confirming it has opened an investigation into an alleged rape at a hotel where the Real Madrid star stayed last week.

Mbappe moved from Paris Saint-Germain to Real Madrid on a free transfer in the summer transfer window and scored seven goals in eleven games for his new club.

His relationship with PSG was very broken at the time of his departure. After he told the club last summer that he wanted to leave on a free transfer in 2025, they tried to sell him.

The France captain stayed for the 2023/24 season but is preparing for a hearing over unpaid wages he is controversially owed.

Mbappe claims he is owed €55m (£45m) by the French champions.

The dispute stems from the player's contract extension two years ago. Club sources say there was a commitment at the time, repeated many times later, that in the event of a free transfer he would forego certain financial benefits, such as bonuses, to compensate the club.

The allegations to which Mbappe responded are of the utmost seriousness.

Swedish media reported on Monday that police are investigating an alleged rape that allegedly took place at the same hotel where Mbappe and his entourage stayed in Stockholm last week.

The report does not suggest that Mbappe was involved in the alleged crime or even knew about it, but assumes that the story was the work of PSG.

Reports emerged from France on Tuesday morning indicating that the Swedish judiciary had issued a statement confirming that it had opened an investigation following the filing of a rape complaint.

Tellingly, Mbappe's name is not mentioned despite being “targeted”, according to two Swedish newspapers.

“Following media reports of an alleged rape in Stockholm, the public prosecutor can confirm that a rape report has been received by the police,” the statement said.

“According to the report, the incident occurred on October 10, 2024 in a hotel in central Stockholm. The investigation is being led by senior prosecutor Marina Chirakova. The prosecutor is not available to the media and cannot provide any further information at this time. A new press release will be sent out as soon as more information becomes available.”
