How Kamala Harris' viewership in Pennsylvania compares to Donald Trump's

Vice President Kamala Harris drew a larger crowd than Donald Trump as both presidential candidates showed up to campaign events in Pennsylvania on Monday.

With its 19 Electoral College votes, Pennsylvania is one of the most important swing states in the 2024 election. The best path for the Republican and Democratic candidates to 270 Electoral College votes is to win the Keystone State in November.

Harris spoke at a rally at the Erie Insurance Arena in northwestern Pennsylvania on the same day that Trump attended a town hall in suburban Philadelphia hosted by South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem. Photos from the sites of both events seemed to indicate that there were more people at the vice president's event, even though Trump's town hall was held in a smaller venue.

Gus Pine, managing director of Erie Events, said Erie Times News that “our capacity for this event is 5,400 guests” before Harris' performance, and that he expected the venue to be full. By comparison, Trump's town hall was held at the smaller venue at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center and Fairgrounds in Oaks, where the largest venue has a capacity of just over 3,000 people.

Newsweek emailed the Trump and Harris campaigns seeking comment.

The former president has repeatedly cited large crowds at his campaign rallies as evidence of his popularity. Trump often exaggerated the number of attendees by tens of thousands.

For his recent rally in California's Coachella Valley, the former president seemed to estimate that about 100,000 people would have attended, but the local newspaper reported Desert sun reported that Riverside County limited the event to a maximum capacity of 15,000 people.

“Maybe Trump doesn't care about crowd size anymore, but Harris drew two to three times as many people here as Trump did here in Erie (he was at a much smaller venue) two weeks ago,” said SV Dáte, senior White House correspondent at The Huffington Post, published on X, formerly Twitter.

Trump appeared in Erie on Sept. 29 for an indoor rally at the Bayfront Convention Center, where the main room holds a maximum of 4,000 people.

Trump reportedly stopped holding large outdoor rallies for security reasons after he was assassinated at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13, but he resumed them in August.

In September, Trump told the crowd in Erie that he would have to move his planned outdoor rally in Wisconsin the day before to a smaller indoor venue because the Secret Service did not have the manpower to secure the event, as the United Nations General Assembly takes place in New York.

After returning to Butler, Pennsylvania, on October 9, he said around 100,000 people attended the rally. Newsweek found that the number may have been closer to 30,000, based on crowd-mapping software and expert analysis.

Trump's town hall in Oaks was interrupted twice Monday by medical emergencies in the crowd.

“Doctor, please. Doctor. Thank you very much,” he said at one point through the microphone. “We have incredible people. They come here hours before and it’s a bit hot.”

Minutes later, the crowd shouted for a “medic,” causing Trump to stop speaking again.

The former president then said he would not answer any more questions and instead asked his team to play music while he danced on stage at times for about 30 minutes.

“To lighten the mood, President Trump turned the town hall into an impromptu concert, and the audience loved it,” Karoline Leavitt, Trump's campaign spokeswoman, told ABC News. “The room was filled with joy.”

At her Erie event Monday night, Harris questioned Trump's mental intelligence and described her rival as “unstable” and “unhinged.”

“Donald Trump is becoming increasingly unstable and unhinged, and he seeks unchecked power, that's what he's looking for. He wants to send the military after American citizens,” she said.

She played a 30-second clip in which Trump repeatedly spoke about “the enemy within” and how he should be detained or “dealt with” by the National Guard or the military.

“He considers anyone who doesn’t support him or bend to his will to be an enemy of our country,” Harris said.
