Zibanejad had a goal and two assists in the Rangers' win over the Red Wings

Artemi Panarin had three assists, giving him three straight multi-point games early in the season (two goals, five assists). Reilly Smith scored his first goal for the Rangers (2-0-1), and Alexis Lafreniere and Chris Kreider also scored.

“There's definitely more we could have done, but (Shesterkin) was obviously a really, really big difference,” Red Wings coach Derek Lalonde said. “He’s special.”

Dylan Larkin scored and Patrick Kane had an assist for his first point of the season for the Red Wings (1-2-0), who were 0-for-4 on the power play and fell to 1-for-11 in three-point games. Alex Lyon made 24 saves in his first start for Detroit.

The Red Wings and Rangers play again on Thursday at Little Caesars Arena.

“I thought we had enough performances to win that hockey game, but it just didn’t work out,” Larkin said. “A little shout out to Shesterkin. I don't think we screened enough pucks through traffic and capitalized on second and third chances, but you can learn from that and we'll have those guys back on Thursday. When he plays, we'll have to remember that he struggles with second and third chances when you have him one-on-one. We have to make it difficult for him.

Lafreniere gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 11:45 of the first period by hitting a one-timer from the right faceoff circle after a pass from Panarin.

“He said he tried to hit the bar down, but he had five holes like usual,” Panarin said. “We’ve talked about this play before. For example, if I go to the middle, he pulls back a little for a one-timer. He did that. He hit the net and it went in. Everyone is happy.”
