The Detroit Red Wings are struggling to get anything going after their 4-1 loss to the Rangers

play

NEW YORK – The difference in the game came down to special teams: The Detroit Red Wings got nothing out of their power play; Her opponent did.

A timely goal from Dylan Larkin and a solid performance from Alex Lyon weren't enough in the Wings' only appearance at Madison Square Garden this season. The New York Rangers, a Stanley Cup favorite at the start of the season, seized the opportunity and defeated their Original Six rivals 4-1.

“It's going to be a frustrating game because we did some pretty good things,” coach Derek Lalonde said. “When you have a pretty good performance away from home against a team like this, you have to learn to find a way to get some points.”

When the Wings made a power play midway through the third period, it was their fourth of the night. The Wings were prevented from getting into the lanes by the Rangers and their best chance was a wrist shot from Vladimir Tarasenko.

Lyon was pulled with 2:43 left, giving the Wings a 6-on-5 lead. Mika Zibanejad took advantage and added a scoreless goal to his night with two assists.

Dylan Larkin scored in the final second of the first period, but the Wings entered the third period trailing by one goal as they faced their fifth penalty shootout of the game. Reilly Smith tied the score five minutes into the third period, beating Lyon, who appeared to be shielded by Moritz Seider.

The Wings play the Rangers again on Thursday at Little Caesars Arena.

Why Lyon began

Since Cam Talbot had made 42 saves to secure a shutout in the previous game, it seemed like he had earned a second straight start. But it was a high-profile game for the 37-year-old, and the Wings wanted to get Lyon in a game too, so he got the nod in New York. Derek Lalonde pointed out how Lyon “gave us a huge boost” last season: “We had a 16-4-2 stretch, and if we had one person in that stretch who was our MVP, it was he.” Alexis Lafreniere scored in Lyon at 11:45 of the first period when Lafreniere was exposed to a one-time pass from Artemi Panarin. Lyon was outstanding on New York's second power play, making three saves as the Rangers spent the entire two minutes in Detroit's zone. Towards the end of the second period, Lyon made one of his best saves when he stuck out his glove hand to stop the charging Vincent Trochek. Lyon finished the game with 24 saves.

Great goal

A week ago, Justin Holl was assigned to the minors after clearing waivers. Holl barely played in the first season of his three-year, $10.2 million contract last season (playing in just 38 games) and was recalled after Jeff Petry was injured in the season opener. Holl spoke of his belief in himself during the preseason, saying, “I know I'm an NHL player.” He showed that on Monday night when he received a drop pass from Patrick Kane at the top of the right circle in New York Zone caught, ran up the flank to near the goal line and then centered a pass that Larkin sent past Igor Stesterkin (31 saves). . There were 1.1 seconds left on the clock, which gave the Wings the equalizer shortly after the end of the first period.

Strength boost

The Wings' first power play lasted at least 20 seconds when Seider was called for interference; That was the Wings' only man advantage in the first period. In the second game they had a goal after a few minutes. Like previous games, the Wings had a power play where they did anything but score. This time, point the finger at Shesterkin; He was brilliant, including a highlight-reel windmill save against Alex DeBrincat, one of six saves made in that two-minute stretch. However, it was the Rangers who took advantage of an extra player in the second period when Chris Kreider converted Mika Zibanejad's shot at 17:07 to make it 2-1.

“The game-winning goal came on the power play,” said Lalonde. “They won the special teams game.”
