Who are the people who smile at baseball games? Why the horror film “Smile 2” uses actors in MLB playoff games

Baseball superfan “Marlins Man” can still be seen behind home plate at some of MLB's biggest games, but this October there's something much more sinister in the crowd.

Fans watching Game 2 of the NLCS between the Mets and Dodgers saw two people in neon yellow outfits smiling behind home plate, seemingly without any interest in the game.

There's nothing wrong with smiling at a baseball game, at least when the team is winning. However, these fans never stop smiling, causing much confusion among viewers at home.

Here's what you need to know about the people smiling at MLB playoff games this October.

Who are the people who smile at baseball games?

The smiling people behind Home Plate are actors promoting “Smile 2,” a sequel to the horror film coming out just in time for Halloween.

The original Smile film features people smiling creepily after being taken over by an entity – smiling is the least of what happens from that point on, but the film and its branding are based on creepy smiles.

This isn't the first time the “Smile” franchise has used this type of marketing tactic. Towards the end of the 2022 season, actors were sent to MLB stadiums ahead of the original film's release, and the results were about as scary as you'd expect.

The publicity stunt isn't just limited to baseball games this fall. Smiling people were also seen peeking out of a Dallas hotel ahead of the film's release.

The most critical moments of the MLB postseason are still ahead, with the NLCS still in its early stages and the ALCS starting Monday, so the Dodger Stadium stunt could be the start of a longer marketing campaign.

What is Smile 2?

“Smile 2” is a horror film sequel to “Smile” that hit theaters in 2022. Naomi Scott plays the main role.

“As she embarks on a new world tour, global pop sensation Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) experiences increasingly horrific and inexplicable events,” reads the film’s synopsis from Paramount Pictures. “Overwhelmed by the escalating horrors and pressures of fame, she must confront her dark past before her life spirals out of control.”

The original film features a therapist and several patients who are taken over by an entity. A creepy smile is, as you might expect, the creature's trademark. While the premise of the second film appears to be quite different than the first, the horror aspect will likely be reminiscent of the original film.

Smile 2 release date

“Smile 2” is scheduled to release on October 18th, right in the middle of the ALCS and NLCS. It's unclear whether the marketing campaign could extend beyond the release date.
