Autumn in full effect – weather in the Hudson Valley

The seasons are changing, and we'll get a taste of that in the next few days. On Monday, an upper level low pressure system will rotate through the Northeast, spreading showers and even some wet snowflakes in the mountains…

NYS Radar Loop: Monday 2:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m

It's been many months since we last saw blue on radar, but this is a clear Canadian air mass that is pulling enough cold air up to create wet snow in the Adirondacks and even parts of the Catskills. At high altitudes in the Catskills, a muddy surface cannot be ruled out.

But this front is bringing the fresh Canadian air mass into the Hudson Valley. Galeful winds will be felt Monday evening before winds ease overnight and Tuesday morning. On Tuesday, clouds will mix with sunshine and a few convective rain showers will scatter across the region…perhaps even a wet snowflake or two in the mountain towns.

Tuesday and Wednesday will be the coldest days in terms of afternoon high temperatures. On both days, temperatures in the valley will struggle to cross the 40°C mark. Pretty chilly for mid-October and certainly a taste of fall. But one of the more notable impacts of this taste of fall will be the possibility of a widespread frost and possibly a hard freeze this week.

The coldest night will likely be Wednesday night into Thursday, where overnight low temperatures could fall below freezing across much of the Hudson Valley. This would result in a widespread hard freeze throughout the valley and a formal end to the growing season. But while this map represents the coldest night, the rest of the week will also be very chilly

And Friday morning looks just as cold, if not a little colder. Temperatures are expected to be around 30°C each morning…widespread frost is likely. So if you still have any outdoor plants at this point, you should definitely take action over the next 4 to 5 days and expect a possible frost or hard freeze across the Hudson Valley. We will attempt to post frost and freeze warnings as they are issued throughout the week. Therefore, before we close, we want to make it clear to our viewers in the Catskills and Taconics that the National Weather Service is not issuing freeze or freeze warnings for the higher terrain in our region because it believes the growing season is over.

So get the wood stoves ready, dust off the thermostats… some of us may be turning on the heat for the first time this season. Although it will be cool, it looks mostly dry during the work week. Bundle up in the Hudson Valley and have a great week!
