Where does “In Da Clurb, We All Fam” come from?

That One Sound is a column by internet culture reporter Charlotte Colombo that examines the origins of popular sounds heard on TikTok.

The best internet trends are the ones that are literally nonsense. Remember Yanny and Laurel? This latest TikTok trend not only taps into the craziness, but it also comes from a popular cult TV show. In other words, it has all the ingredients for a viral hit. Here's what we know about this TikTok sound that became a meme.

The sound

“You know her?” asks a female voice. “No,” replies another. “In the club we are all known.” The first voice then asks the second speaker to repeat what was said until she finally says: “In the club we are all a family.” Are you racist?”

Contextually, this sound is about the use of African American vernacular, but when it comes to this TikTok trend, users interpret this dialogue further. This trend specifically involves a person saying something that is either niche or literally difficult to pronounce and understand.

Here are some examples:

“My Sims just died when they met someone,” said @vstreetlove.

“When I point someone to a TikTok and they don't understand it,” said @coriithaplayboy

“POV: You're the only one who really knows what your toddler is saying,” said @litfrank

“I'm referring to a Vine near someone too young,” said @miahlashun.

The sound went so viral that Sabrina Carpenter even tried it out.

Where does it come from?

This sound comes from Broad citya sitcom that aired on Comedy Central between 2014 and 2019. The show follows best friends Abbi and Ilana as they try to navigate life in the Big Apple. In this scene in particular, Abbi and Ilana managed to get into a club night at Jay Z's 40/40 club.

When Abbi expresses concern that other clubgoers will know that they have raided the club night, Ilana responds by waving at the other partygoers as if she knows them. She then tells Abbi that “we’re all families at the club” – although Abbi isn’t quite sure what that means.

While Broad city After its broadcast ended five years ago, TikTok users are happy to see the show making a comeback in this way. “I miss Broad city more than anything,” one commenter wrote. “Broad city will never get old,” remarked a second.

While a third added: “Love watching Broad city on my FYP.” And considering that this sound has been used 8,836 times, we should prepare to see a lot more of it.
