Nations League: Leweling enjoys dream debut as Germany beat Netherlands | Nations League

Stuttgart's Jamie Leweling enjoyed a dream Germany Debut and scored the winning goal in a 1-0 win over the Netherlands in the Nations League on Monday to secure his country's place in the next round.

The 23-year-old shot the ball into the net in the second minute, but his shot was ruled offside. He did better in the 64th minute, shooting into the top corner after the Dutch failed to clear a corner.

Before kick-off in Munich, Germany said goodbye to Ilkay Gündogan, Manuel Neuer, Thomas Müller and Toni Kroos after their retirement from international football. Following their recent deaths, there was also a minute's silence in memory of Johan Neeskens and Dieter Burdenski.

Germany had the visitors on the back foot from the start, creating chances for Tim Kleindienst and Maximilian Mittelstädt, while the Dutch struggled to get into the game. The hosts narrowly got through with Serge Gnabry before Leweling scored the winning goal. The visitors, missing the suspended Virgil van Dijk, failed to get on target in the first third but improved after the break and both Xavi Simons and Donyell Malen had great chances in the closing stages to earn a barely deserved point secure.

“We won as a team. I scored, but we played a good game and I’m glad I contributed,” Leweling said. “The Dutch are a big team. We let them run, kept the ball and took advantage of our chances to score.”

Germany sit at the top of Group A3 with 10 points from four games and are assured of a place in the next round, while the Dutch are five points behind in second place. In the same group there were two goals from Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai Hungary a 2-0 win Bosnia in Zenica and is now level with the Netherlands on five points.
