Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance made the comments to ABC News correspondent Martha Raddatz on Sunday after she attempted to inform the Ohio senator about the presence of Venezuelan migrant gangs in Aurora, Colorado.

Former President Donald Trump, 78, stalked a Denver suburb on Friday, commenting that the Tren de Aragua (TdA) crime syndicate had “overrun” the city.

“The incidents were limited to a handful of apartment complexes – apartment complexes, and the mayor said our dedicated police officers responded to those concerns,” Raddatz, 71, told Vance on ABC's “This Week.”

“Martha, do you hear yourself?” asked Vance, 40, visibly surprised by the reporter’s objection. “Only a handful of apartment complexes in America have been taken over by Venezuelan gangs, and Donald Trump is the problem and not Kamala Harris’ open border?”

“Americans are fed up with what's going on,” Vance continued, “and they have every right to be, and I find this exchange really interesting, Martha, because you seem more focused on nitpicking everything “Donald Trump has said rather than admitted that apartment complexes across the United States are being taken over by violent gangs.”

Raddatz later tried again, saying TdA “did not invade or take over the city, as Donald Trump said.”

“A few apartment complexes, no big deal,” Vance replied quickly.

According to a Denver law firm that investigated the situation, at least 10 people with ties to TdA were arrested in September after gang members “gave a stranglehold” on the Whispering Pines Apartments complex and engaged in extortion, child prostitution and other criminal activity .

It is estimated that TdA has about 5,000 members between the United States and Venezuela.

“We need to get American communities back to a safe space,” Vance said Sunday. “And when you let people in in the millions, most of whom are unvetted and most of whom you don't know who they really are, unfortunately you're going to have these kinds of problems.”

During his rally last Friday, Trump vowed to crack down on gangs, promising: “We will deploy elite units of ICE, Border Patrol and federal law enforcement agents to arrest and deport every last illegal alien gang member until there are none left.” left in this country.”

Raddatz's fact check covered Republican Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman's rebuke of the former president's comments.

“The city and state have not been 'taken over', 'invaded' or 'occupied' by migrant gangs,” Coffman said after Friday's rally. “The incidents in Aurora, a city of 400,000 residents, were limited to a handful of specific apartment complexes, and our dedicated law enforcement officers have responded and will continue to respond to these concerns.”
