What happened on I-290 and why was it closed? What we know so far – NBC Chicago

Lanes of I-290 were closed for hours and traffic was at a standstill during Monday's busy commute after a pedestrian was struck and killed by an SUV on the Eisenhower Expressway overnight.

According to Illinois State Police, the incident occurred around 4:19 a.m. in the exit lane of I-290 near 17th Avenue in suburban Maywood.

At that time, an adult male was struck by a vehicle in the roadway, ISP said. After being struck, the man was sent into the entry lane, NBC 5's Lisa Chavarria reported.

At 5am, traffic was diverted in both directions and significant congestion was reported. Traffic in the outbound lanes was rerouted at 9th Avenue, the ISP said, while traffic in the inbound lanes was rerouted at 25th Avenue.

By 5:30 a.m., travel time on I-290 was more than 75 minutes, Chavarria reported, with traffic backed up “well past Wolf Road.” On the outward journey the journey times were up to 90 minutes.

As the morning progressed, these travel times increased.

“If this is your route, do not take the Eisenhower Expressway,” Chavarria warned.

According to ISP, both the entrance and exit lanes of I-290 may remain closed during the morning commute as the investigation continues.

At 6:45 a.m., photos and videos from the scene showed a heavy traffic jam with several state vehicles on the highway and a heavily damaged SUV with a broken windshield and a badly dented hood.

As of 8:45 a.m., both the outbound and return lanes were open again, the ISP said.
