The cold front is moving into the Chicago area, bringing strong winds, rain and choppy waves

Chicago will feel the effects of a cold front over the next few days, National Weather Service officials say.

According to NWS forecaster Lee Carlaw, low temperatures in the city will fall into the low 40s and highs in the mid-60s until at least Thursday until temperatures begin to rise again. Monday will see temperatures as high as 66° and as high as 44°; Tuesday's high is 52 and low is 41.

Areas outside the city, particularly northwestern Illinois, could see temperatures exceed 30°C and experience the first frost of the season.

There will also be some lake-effect rain Sunday and Monday nights into the morning – with the possibility of “short-term heavy rain,” Carlaw said – as well as periodic wind gusts of up to 45 mph throughout Monday.

“The storm threat is not excessive,” Carlaw said.

These winds will also create dangerous swimming conditions, with waves up to 14 feet expected along northwest Indiana coasts. The Chicago coast will see waves closer to 11 feet before falling to 5 feet Monday evening.

Because of the strong wind shear, conditions could also be conducive to the formation of water spouts, which may be a cool visual spectacle but pose little danger to people on land, Carlaw said.

“These generally do not pose a risk of coming ashore, but we are keeping an eye on this,” Carlaw said.
