Indonesia's new market leader Hyundai launches IPO in India worth $3.3 billion, GDP in China

Data on the Chinese economy

China begins an important week for economic data with the release of its quarterly trade statistics and other figures. All eyes will be on Friday's planned third-quarter gross domestic product announcement as authorities strive to meet their stated annual GDP growth target of “around 5%.”

Hyundai launches Asia's largest IPO in 2024

South Korea's Hyundai is launching a $3.3 billion share sale in its Indian unit as the automaker looks to expand its operations in the world's third-largest car market. The IPO is the largest ever in India and also the largest in Asia so far this year. Stock trading will begin on October 22 in Mumbai.

Chinese Prime Minister in Vietnam

Chinese Premier Li Qiang is wrapping up a three-day trip to Hanoi, more than a week after Vietnam condemned Beijing for the “brutal” violation of some of its fishermen in the disputed South China Sea. His schedule includes meetings with Vietnam's leaders, a wreath-laying ceremony near the body of former Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh at a mausoleum, an exhibition on agricultural exports to China and a Vietnam-China economic forum.

GDP Singapore, political meeting

Singapore releases July-September economic growth figures amid widespread expectations that the city-state's central bank will hold off on easing monetary policy amid stubborn inflation and uncertain growth prospects. The government expects GDP growth of between 2% and 3% for the year as a whole.

TUESDAY

Pakistan is hosting the SCO summit

Pakistani authorities reportedly sought to restrict the movement of Chinese nationals working in the country during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit after two Chinese engineers were killed in a bomb attack near the airport in southern Karachi on Sunday. The nine full members of the SCO, including China, India, Iran and Russia, will meet in Islamabad on Tuesday and Wednesday. Chinese Premier Li Qiang is expected to attend.

The general elections in Japan begin

Japanese political parties officially begin campaigning ahead of the October 27 general election. The vote comes amid a scandal involving the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, in which dozens of members failed to properly disclose funds raised through political activities. The party, led by new Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, wants to regain public trust in the fight for 465 seats in the lower house of parliament.

Speech by the leader of Hong Kong

Hong Kong Prime Minister John Lee delivers his third annual keynote speech. The city leader is expected to focus on the economy after further curbing dissent earlier this year with the introduction of a local national security law, known as Article 23.

TSMC reports

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's largest contract chipmaker, reports its third-quarter results. The company, whose customers include Apple and Nvidia, benefited from the boom in artificial intelligence. Analysts will be keeping an eye on the company's earnings call in light of its AI-related demand outlook and updates on its global expansion plans.

Malaysia budget

Malaysia's Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announces his third annual budget that will focus on fiscal austerity while addressing inflation, economic reforms and cost of living challenges. Key areas to watch include possible changes to consumption taxes and social spending.

Prabowo is sworn in as Indonesia's new president

Indonesia ushers in a new political era as Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto takes the helm of Southeast Asia's largest economy, succeeding President Joko Widodo, who served a maximum of two terms. The former special forces commander championed a plan to provide free school meals nationwide and set an ambitious goal of 8% annual economic growth in his first term. Widodo's eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, is sworn in as vice president.
