Dave Canales isn't ready to hand the QB1 job back to Bryce Young, but remains committed

After Chuba Hubbard's 38-yard touchdown run on the game's second drive, not much went right for the Carolina Panthers in their 36-10 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon.

You hear coaches talk about it all the time. Quarterbacks get too much credit when the team wins and all the blame when the team loses. Such was the case after the Panthers' loss, when head coach Dave Canales was asked if he would consider turning the offense back over to former No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young next week or sometime in the near future.

“No, Andy is our quarterback,” Canales said. “I think it's about going back to basics. When we watch this film, we attack the areas where we need to improve. Then we go to the next game and focus on work again and capture a great week of work.”

Dalton completed 18 of 28 pass attempts for 136 yards and intercepted one pass. No, he didn't have a great day, but neither did his supporting cast. He was sacked three times, the receivers struggled to win their one-on-one duels, and for some reason Canales shied away from the running game too early, opting to keep throwing against one of the league's best pass defenses. It's not Andy's fault and Canales knows it.

When asked about the decision to bring Young into the game, he replied: “I just saw it as an opportunity.” We had a few injuries on offense. Once again I wanted to get him in there to get some live performances. He did a fantastic job, played with energy, extended plays, found some finishes in the backfield, that was fantastic. It's a tough situation, but at that point it was something I wanted to get (QB) Andy (Dalton) out of because of the different things that were happening on the offensive line. Just give Bryce the opportunity to play good football while we still had time.”
