The Cowboys' Dak Prescott plans to turn to the Lions' Aidan Hutchinson after his injury

Dak Prescott knows the difficult road that comes with recovering from a serious leg injury. This is partly why the Cowboys quarterback plans to link up with one of the Lions' star defenders, Aidan Hutchinson, in the near future.

Hutchinson broke his right tibia while sacking Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott in the third quarter of Sunday's 47-9 win at Dallas. The third-year player will remain at a local hospital in the city where he will undergo immediate surgery.

“This is tough, hard to watch,” Prescott told reporters after the loss. “He experienced it and knows where he is at this moment. I hated it for him. I hated it. I hated everything. But at first I just told him to keep his head up. It's part of the story, I promise. The way this guy started his career, the guy he seems to be, if you don't know him, he'll be better afterward. I know it's probably hard to imagine right now.

“And the last part I just told him is that it’s part of the story. It's part of his history. And he's a damn good player. I mean, hell, he did it with a sack. He is a game changer. I wish him all the best for his recovery. I know it will be both mentally and physically challenging, but the way he started his career and the player he appears to be, I can imagine he will be fine and recover from this becomes.”

In 2020, Prescott himself suffered a season-ending leg injury in a win over the Giants in Week 5. He suffered a compound fracture and dislocation of his right ankle, and similar to Hutchinson, Prescott underwent immediate surgery that night.

At this time, the Lions are not officially ruling Hutchinson out for this season. Before the game, Hutchinson was one of the early candidates for Defensive Player of the Year.

The play on which he beat Prescott contributed to his league-leading 7.5 sacks. While bringing down the Cowboys quarterback, Hutchinson's right leg broke in a collision with teammate Alim McNeil.

Before Hutchinson was carried off the field by medical staff with a cast on his right leg, several Lions and Cowboys players surrounded him to give him words of encouragement at the unfortunate moment. One of those players was Prescott.

“It’s just something I felt in that moment,” Prescott said. “To be honest, I'll probably get his number, I know I'll get that from one of the Michigan guys in the locker room, and get back in touch. All I know is that at that moment, when I was in that position, I remember a man, Logan (Ryan)… he gave me some encouraging words, but when you're in that position again, it's blurry. It's blurry.

“So I don’t even know if he heard me. I don't care if he heard me. I understand where he was, but it was Logan's reaction to me that meant the most to me, and I will do the same. Maybe it's even about passing on and sharing the same book he shared with me… Since he's the competitor, he probably didn't care what I had to say and wished him well and everything, whether it was surgery, whenever that was, and he’ll come back better.”

Two of the books Prescott mentioned were an untitled book focused on Kobe Bryant and “Relentless: From Good to Great to Unstoppable” by Tim Grover, the former coach of Bryant, Dwyane Wade and Michael Jordan.
