Man arrested with loaded guns near Trump's Coachella rally, sheriff says

A man was arrested late Saturday outside former President Donald Trump's campaign rally in Coachella, California, after officers conducting a routine security check found him carrying a loaded shotgun, a pistol, ammunition and several fake passports, Riverside sheriff's officials said County.

The Secret Service said in a statement Sunday that the incident had no impact on protective measures and that Trump was not in danger.

The person, who authorities have now identified as Vem Miller, a 49-year-old Las Vegas resident, said he was a member of the press who passed through the outside security perimeter of the event.

The security checkpoint where he was arrested was on the inner rim, controlled by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department and only accessible to residents and people with official documents, according to Sheriff Chad Bianco.

While attempting to confirm the man's clearance, officers discovered that his vehicle – an unregistered SUV with “homemade” license plates, according to Bianco – was in a state of disarray.

During a subsequent search, weapons and passports as well as driver's licenses were found under various pseudonyms, Bianco said. There are also indications that the man belongs to the anti-government movement “Sovereign Citizen,” said the sheriff, who described it as a “fringe group.”

Trump was not at the rally at the time of the incident, officials said.

The man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a loaded firearm and possession of a high-capacity magazine, the department said in a statement released Sunday. He was taken into custody, booked into jail and then released on $5,000 bail pending a later court date, court records show.

When he was arrested by local police, the man made no threats directed at Trump, and federal investigators have found no threatening material directed at Trump, sources told ABC News.

Sources say there is evidence on social media that he supports Trump and was at the RNC.

“Given previous incidents in Trump's life, we had a very detailed plan for the safety of Trump and attendees,” Bianco said in a statement Sunday night, referring to an attempted assassination last month at Trump's golf course in Palm Beach, Florida, as well as a shooting in July at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.

The Riverside County Sheriff's Department is working with the FBI and Secret Service. Aside from the firearms and ammunition charges, all other charges would be brought by the federal government, the sheriff's statement said Sunday.
