Jim Harbaugh Update: Chargers HC announces illness that caused him to leave game

After dealing with a medical issue before today's game against the LA Chargers, Jim Harbaugh explained what happened to him before the game.

After Los Angeles' win on Sunday, Harbaugh told the media that he was experiencing atrial flutter.

“I think it's a minor problem – it's called atrial flutter. I got into an episode with that today,” Harbaugh said. “The doctors examined me and it returned to sinus rhythm, i.e. normal rhythm.”

This diagnosis is nothing new for Harbaugh's health. He noticed it considering he has had issues with his heart in the past, including another incident when it occurred during a game in the NFL.

“I could tell there were some erratic hits,” Harbaugh said.

“Had a couple of ablations – one in 1999 and one in 2012,” Harbaugh recalls. “I always remember that in 2012 because it was during the Monday night game…It wasn't even during the game. After the game I was checked out. I ended up having to undergo an ablation because it wouldn’t get back into rhythm.”

While Harbaugh underwent physicals, Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter took over as acting head coach in his place. He then returned about halfway through the first quarter against the Broncos. Los Angeles then went 23-16 at Mile High. After taking a 23-0 lead at the start of the fourth quarter, things got tighter than hoped. Nonetheless, in their first season under Harbaugh, LA went 3-2 overall and 2-1 against the AFC West in five games.

On this basis, Harbaugh was able to return to his team's game this afternoon in Denver. Most importantly for him, if something like that happens to him, he is now undefeated in matches.

“2-0 with cardiac arrhythmia,” Harbaugh said to a laughing reporter conference after the game.
