A new Netflix documentary series revealed the tragedy that occurred for Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler during the 2023-24 season.

The series, From 5, followed Butler, Anthony Edwards, LeBron James, Domantas Sabonis and Jayson Tatum throughout the season last year. On the show, Butler revealed that his father died before the All-Star break.

“Right after the All-Star break, (my teammates) really need me to be a lot better,” Butler said on the show. “I always want to answer that call. But I don't care about basketball at the moment. I don't care. …It sucks to hurt. It sucks losing people.”

“I didn't know what to do. No money in the world could bring him back. Basketball, no matter how many times I played it, it couldn’t fix that.”

In From 5, Butler said his father, Jimmy Butler Jr., died of a terminal illness on Feb. 8, leading him to take a leave of absence following the tragedy as he missed the team's final three games before the All-Star break had missed (h/t). The Miami Heralds Anthony Chiang).

Despite a season filled with sadness for Butler, he still had a strong year, averaging 20.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and five assists per game. He and the Heat finished the season strong and made the playoffs, although Butler was injured as Miami fell to the Boston Celtics in the first round.

Butler is now preparing for his 14th NBA season and his sixth with the Heat. Butler and Miami have been close to winning a championship in recent years with two appearances in the NBA Finals, but have not yet overcome the hurdle.

Butler has accomplished a lot throughout his career but is still in the hunt for his first championship. He will face a strong Eastern Conference this year and hopes to win his first title.
