Cyclist killed after being struck by vehicle

WEST VERO CORRIDOR — A 39-year-old Vero Beach man riding an electric bicycle died Friday afternoon after he fell from the bike and was struck by an SUV, officials said. The crash prompted law enforcement officials to close all eastbound lanes on State Road 60 for several hours.

The driver of the SUV, a 64-year-old man, and passengers ages 63 and 71, all from Vero Beach, were not injured, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash between the bicyclist and the SUV occurred just before 5 p.m. in the 7800 block of SR 60, east of Interstate 95, said Kevin Jaworski, a spokesman for the Indian River County Sheriff's Office. Police said the cyclist was traveling eastbound in the bike path on the south side of the roadway.

The driver of the SUV was traveling in the same direction in the outside lane next to the bike path. Officers said the cyclist drove over tree debris, fell into the outside lane and was hit by the SUV.

The cyclist was taken to Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital, said David Rattray, deputy chief of Indian River County Fire Rescue. Jaworski said the man arrived at the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Doctors declared the man dead on Friday evening, Jaworski said.

The road was reopened at 11 p.m. Police officers from the Traffic Homicide Squad were on scene investigating the fatal collision.
