Texas residents express frustration with the economy and trust Trump more than Harris

Fox News Digital spoke to residents south of Houston, Texas, this week about the economy and who they trust more to stimulate the economy as president between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

After shopping at Costco, residents in front of and behind the camera expressed their frustration with current overall costs and the economy as a whole.

“All prices have gone up,” Melissa told Fox News Digital.

“No, things are not going well at all,” said another resident, originally from Egypt.

Ralph said the economy had resulted in higher costs for his family, explaining: “I think inflation has gotten out of control. Housing and interest rates are out of control. Food drives have doubled. And a good shopping trip used to cost around 150-125.” . An average shopping trip now costs 250-300.

Locals also shared who they think can best handle the economy as president.

“You know, when Trump was in office, things were going well,” Mark said.

Ralph said he “definitely” trusts Trump more to handle the economy.

I don't think Kamala even knows what's going on. I think she’s a puppet,” he said. “He has a proven track record and hopes to get back in and save this Harris economy.”

Another resident also said she trusted the former president more: “Trump because he is the only businessman capable of running our country.”

Mark cited Trump's time in office compared to the current Biden-Harris administration as a reason for his confidence in the former president.

“Trump because of what he did last time, who was in office and what the current administration is, what happened to the current administration over the last four years,” he said. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. You know, they tried to fix it. So here we are today.”

Trump Harris

No Republican presidential candidate has lost in Texas since 1976, but the state has become increasingly competitive in recent elections. Trump won the state by less than six points in 2020, a sharp contrast from just 12 years ago when Mitt Romney carried the state by nearly 16 points.

The economy remains the top concern for American voters as they prepare to cast their ballots in the presidential election.

A Fox News national poll in September, also conducted after the debate, found that 39% of voters surveyed cited the economy as their most pressing issue, well ahead of immigration (16%) and abortion (15%). All other problems tested were in the single digits.

As the country's economic recovery from the pandemic continues, Inflation remains a major concern of Americans.

The former president leads the vice president by 13 points in a New York Times-Siena College post-debate poll and is ahead by 7 points in an ABC News Ipsos poll also taken after the showdown.

But Trump's economic lead over Harris is just 5 points in the Fox News poll and just 2 points in the AP/NORC poll.

Harris has touted what she calls “opportunity economics” and said her administration would crack down on price gouging and also cut taxes for middle-class Americans. Trump has indicated that economic performance has been successful under his administration and that a return to office would bring back those days.

The Harris ticket got a boost Friday from a strong jobs report for September. Also, striking U.S. longshoremen returned to work on Friday after reaching a tentative agreement with employers on an improved wage deal.

Elizabeth Heckman reported from Texas. Fox News' Paul Steinhauser and Bradford Betz contributed to this report.
