The Chicago Bulls are reportedly signing Joshua Primo

One day after waiving Marcus Domask, the Chicago Bulls made another roster change, but it will be somewhat controversial.

Accordingly The Athletic's Darnell MayberryThe Bulls signed Joshua Primo to an Exhibit 10 contract. The former lottery pick continues to recover from an ankle injury suffered while playing for the Los Angeles Clippers. Primo is reportedly scheduled to continue his rehab in the G-League with the Windy City Bulls.

Bulls make controversial signing

Now let’s talk about the elephant in the room.

Primo was just 20 years old and entered the league after one season at Alabama. While he averaged just 8.1 points and 3.4 assists per game, Primo impressed with his position size, open-floor speed and jump shot during the team's road to the Sweet Sixteen. The San Antonio Spurs drafted the 6-foot-2 guard with the No. 12 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.

During his rookie season, he played 50 games and was the youngest player in the league. Then Primo was released by the Spurs franchise in October 2022. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski further reported that Primo allegedly exposed himself to multiple women during his time with the team. Primo's camp said he would seek mental health help following his release from the Spurs.

In 2023, the NBA completed its investigationwhich confirms the inappropriate behavior. The league suspended Primo for four games.

“The NBA announced today that Joshua Primo has been suspended four games without pay for conduct detrimental to the league,” the NBA said in a statement at the time. “The league conducted its own investigation and consulted with relevant experts. Following that trial, the league found that Primo engaged in inappropriate and offensive behavior by exposing himself to women. Primo maintains his conduct was not intentional and that the league found no evidence other than these brief revelations that he engaged in any sexual or other misconduct. However, this behavior does not meet league standards and requires discipline.”

The Los Angeles Clippers signed Primo to a contract in September 2023 but waived him in April 2024. Now he gets another chance with the Chicago Bulls.

Primo may be a young player with high potential who fits the same mold as the Bulls' other training camp invitees, but is it worth it? There was simply no reason the Bulls had to do this. Especially considering all the talk about establishing a new culture and identity, this is a difficult signing to digest.

UPDATE

Accordingly KC Johnson of Chicago Sports NetworkPrimo was omitted. Given his injury status, this was immediately the expectation upon signing. Primo will now join the organization's G League affiliate, the Windy City Bulls, and continue his rehab.

By signing the Exhibit 10 contract, Primo was incentivized to join Windy City once it was waived. After a certain period of time in the team, he is entitled to a financial bonus.
