When South Florida will feel the effects of this wave

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The tropics remain very active Thursday, including a system that could bring heavy tropical rains to South Florida next week.

First, a low pressure area is expected to form in the Gulf of Mexico, but its development is only at 30%, down slightly from Tuesday.

Regardless of developments, tropical moisture will move into Florida. Stakeholders along the U.S. Gulf Coast should continue to monitor the progress of this system.

“This will basically give us some moisture. And that will happen as early as Monday and then increase the chance of rain for us,” said WPTV First Alert Weather meteorologist Jennifer Correa.

The WPTV First Alert Weather forecast calls for a 60% chance of isolated thunderstorms on Monday, strong storms on Tuesday and tropical rainfall on Wednesday.

Elsewhere in the tropics, Hurricane Kirk, now a major hurricane, is in the middle of the Atlantic. Kirk continues to strengthen, but later this weekend Kirk is expected to accelerate northeastward into the North Atlantic.

Tropical Storm Leslie is raging and strengthening in the eastern tropical Atlantic. Leslie is located about 500 miles southwest of the Cape Verde Islands.

Leslie will follow a similar path to Hurricane Kirk, turning into the colder waters of the North Atlantic. Neither system poses a threat to South Florida.
