INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — This story has been updated with additional information from the Indianapolis Fire Department.

More than 50 veterans were forced from their homes after a major fire broke out at a veterans shelter in downtown Indianapolis.

When investigators arrived, they saw fire coming from the second floor and began fighting the fire. Soon after, the fire was upgraded to a “second alarm.”

The fire department asked all businesses in the building to evacuate shortly after 10 p.m. IFD crews had to help about 18 people out of the building.
