5 dead in plane crash at Falcon Field Airport in Mesa

Five people were killed when a plane collided with a car shortly after takeoff from Falcon Field Airport in Mesa on Tuesday afternoon.

Flames and smoke billowed from the crash at the airport near Greenfield and McKellips Road around 4:40 p.m. on Nov. 5. The aircraft involved was reportedly a six-seat HondaJet HA-420.

“Our community suffered a tragic loss this afternoon. We had a plane that took off from Falon Field Airport in Mesa and upon takeoff crashed into a single vehicle on Greenfield Road,” said Marrisa Ramirez-Ramos, spokeswoman for the Mesa Fire and Medical Department.

A pilot, a co-pilot and three passengers were on board the aircraft at the time of the crash. Four of them did not survive. They have been identified as:

  • Drew Kimball, 44
  • Grahm Kimball, 12 (Officials spelled this victim's name as “Graham,” but family members say the victim's name was “Grahm.”)
  • Spencer Lindahl, 43
  • Rustin Randall, 48

According to a Mountain View High School Class of 1994 social media group, Randall graduated from that school. Meanwhile, the HOPE Mental Health Foundation released a tribute to Drew and Grahm. The tribute identified Grahm as Drew's son.

“We are grateful to have heard him speak at our gala, where 200 guests heard his message about the importance of coming together with our children and loved ones. We will honor his message and legacy at Hope,” part of the statement read. “Our prayers go out to the Kimball family and everyone affected by the tragedy.”

A fifth person on the plane survived and is in hospital with burn injuries. He was only identified as an adult.

The driver of the car that crashed also died, but authorities are waiting to notify that person's family.

The NTSB is investigating the cause of the crash.

According to police, Greenfield Road is closed in both directions from McKellips to McDowell.
