49ers need to stay away from Jets DE Haason Reddick

The pass rush hasn't been the greatest for the San Francisco 49ers this season.

As usual, Nick Bosa leads the way and carries the unit. But he needs some help. It can't always be him who takes the lead. Someone else has to make sure the opposing offense pays off when it throws everything at Bosa. That player is supposed to be Leonard Floyd, and he wasn't bad at all.

It's just that the 49ers could use more. One way to boost their pass rush is to trade New York Jets defensive end Hasson Reddick. It turns out that Reddick is on the trading bloc. So if the 49ers want, they could inquire about him from the Jets. Reddick would make the 49ers' pass rush incredibly lethal and would help them tremendously this season.

However, the 49ers need to stay away from Reddick. I understand that he is a great player and would help the 49ers reach the Super Bowl this season. The problem with acquiring Reddick is that he is looking for a long-term, lucrative contract. That's why he resisted the Jets from the moment they acquired him from the Philadelphia Eagles.

So if the 49ers want Reddick, they have to commit to paying him out long-term. The last time the 49ers traded and extended a pass rusher was in 2019 for Dee Ford from the Kansas City Chiefs. The 49ers benefited greatly in the first year, but then paid for it. Now, Reddick doesn't have nearly the same injury concerns as Ford.

But at 30 years old he begins to improve his age. Do the 49ers want to lucratively extend an aging pass rusher who is not their talent? Probably not. They also need salary cap space for next season when they inevitably extend Brock Purdy. Reddick is a luxury they can't afford right now.

If Reddick might be willing to be a one-year rental, then absolutely. The 49ers should complete this deal immediately, but that's not the case. He is determined to extend his contract lucratively and has even had to miss every game this season. He hasn't even practiced once with the Jets. Additionally, if the 49ers were to acquire Reddick, the Eagles would receive a 2026 second-round pick from the Jets.

It's part of the condition in the original deal to trade for Reddick. That's an indication that the Eagles had an inkling that the Jets and Reddick would have trouble getting a deal done. Do the 49ers want to help the Eagles in the future? There are simply a lot more negatives than positives about taking over Reddick. Leave it as a fun little hypothesis and nothing more.
