3 things that need to be fixed

FRISCO, Texas – The Cowboys may not have a game this week, but that doesn't mean they can't find a way to win during the bye and correct what has troubled them through six games. This week's edition of “Here We Goooo” examines three areas where the Cowboys need to drastically improve heading into the final 11 games of the year.

Points in the red zone

When teams cross the 20-yard line into opponent territory, there should be a lot of confidence that you can get into the end zone and, in a worst-case scenario, escape with three points. The Cowboys were unable to score touchdowns in their redzone outings, with a touchdown scoring percentage of just 37.5%, a good 3rdapprox Worst in the NFL. Dak Prescott has completed just nine of his 23 pass attempts for 80 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions (also the most in the league). CeeDee Lamb has just two catches on six targets for 11 yards and has yet to score from close range.

And the running game doesn't set them up for success either, as the Cowboys ran the ball nine times for nine yards and a touchdown, putting them in tough situations on second and third downs. Nothing goes right for Dallas when they go deep into opposing territory, and while Brandon Aubrey has done his job scoring points on the field, the offense has to try to get him on the field for extra points rather than field goals .

Stop the run

As the Cowboys have learned on the offensive side of the ball, not being able to establish a running game makes running the offense much more difficult. Opposing teams were able to overrun the Cowboys, resulting in offensive explosions like the Lions were able to do last Sunday. Opponents run the ball over the Cowboys defense 50.53% of the time, averaging 143.2 yards per game on the ground, or 6 yardsTh Most rushing yards allowed per game in the league.

Even more concerning for Dallas' defense is that 629 of the 859 rushing yards it has allowed this season have come after contact and is allowing 1.7 rushing touchdowns per game, the second-worst average in the league. Dallas' defense has been playing from behind, with guys like Eric Kendricks, DeMarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons all missing time, and they need this off week to get healthier and hopefully get back on the field soon.

Play free football

Playing free soccer at any level will at least keep you in the game and in most cases help you win it too. When your defense sets your offense up for success and vice versa, you have more opportunities to capitalize on good field position or a weak opposing unit.

The Cowboys haven't found a way to do that since the first half of the season-opening Cleveland game, as their turnover margin sits at -6. The Cowboys defense allows 5.7 yards per play and 3.2 touchdowns per game, both among the worst in the NFL. Things aren't looking much better offensively, with eleven turnovers in six games, the defense stays on the field longer than it should. With the two out of sync, it becomes increasingly difficult for the Cowboys to climb the mountain.
