2024 IHSA Volleyball Playoff Schedule, Springfield Region Results

The Taylorville volleyball team treats the regular season as big practice for the postseason, and now it's finally happening.

The Tornadoes announce another strong lineup ahead of the Class 3A playoffs with a group of seniors dating back to first grade.

They include 6-4 hitter Mazie Fleming and 5-8 setter Sami Breckenridge.

Fleming recently committed to NCAA Division II University of Illinois Springfield. Fleming, also a standout basketball player, said she went the other route because she enjoys the intensity and camaraderie that volleyball brings.

“I’m super excited and think it’s going to be a good fit for me,” Fleming said.

Fleming said she has improved in all aspects of the game over the past four years under head coach Kim Peabody, especially blocking. She was exclusively a center fielder before injuries to the team forced her to move to an outfielder last season. She now masters both positions.

“We block a lot at practice,” Fleming said. “Coach Peabody likes to be tough on it because it’s a really big part of the game. It’s much easier for our passers to score hard hits when we touch the ball.”

Fleming actually led the team in kills (156) and blocks (43) before the weekend.

Breckenridge has plenty of other options with four other players with at least 90 kills, including juniors Alayna Vincent (149) and Ella Appel (116) and seniors Liv Havera (102) and Lia Champley (92). That doesn't even include junior Robyn Ward, who was injured earlier in the season.

“I have a lot of confidence in my hitters,” Breckenridge said. “When I set them up, I assume they're going to put the ball down and play it smart. “Even if it's not a really good set, they're going to do something with the ball that's going to make a difference.”

Breckenridge has emerged as a confident leader over the last two seasons, contributing 562 assists and 192 digs this fall. Until about a month ago, she also did gymnastics, particularly trampoline and tumbling.

She has represented USA Gymnastics overseas for the past three years in England (2023), Bulgaria (2022) and Azerbaijan (2021). Breckenridge said she first tried gymnastics when she was three years old.

“My mom (Josi) got me into it because I was really shy and she was hoping it would open me up a little bit,” Breckenridge said. “It didn’t really help my shyness, but I was just a natural at it and did really well.”

Maybe not at first, but over time it made Breckenridge into the proverbial quarterback she is now. She plans to play volleyball again in college.

“I feel like it's a really big opportunity for you and it's really changed the person that I am today,” Breckenridge said of her time with Team USA. “It made me more responsible. And because I would be a leader for younger people without my parents, I think that helped me become a leader in volleyball.”

Fleming and Breckenridge certainly have a shared history of success that extends to their teammates.

In fact, they finished the eighth grade 18-0. Despite falling short of the Illinois Elementary School Association state finals this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Fleming was a key contributor to Taylorville's first trip to the Illinois High School Association state finals in 2022.

“I’m really grateful to have her as my setter,” Fleming said of Breckenridge. “She’s really talented and knows where to put the ball. She has great timing and I'm really grateful to have her back as my full-time setter for a second year. And the friendship that we've had since then, ever since we played together.” That long just makes the connection that much better.
