15 freeway lanes closed hours after pursuit – NBC Los Angeles

Lanes on the 15 Freeway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas were closed hours after the pursuit of a wanted person for an armed robbery ended Monday evening in Cajon Pass.

Multiple PIT maneuvers were required to stop the high-speed driver during an approximately 90-minute chase through the Inland Empire. The driver wanted in connection with an armed robbery led police on a chase from Hesperia to near Lake Arrowhead, traveling at speeds of up to 120 miles per hour on the 15 Freeway.

The driver dodged at least six patrol units and sped across the highway lanes in a desperate attempt to fend off authorities.

At around 10 p.m., the first PIT maneuver was performed on the vehicle, which came to a standstill for a few minutes before the persistent driver attempted to drive away again. It took at least two more attempts for San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department officers to stop the driver.

Eventually, the driver came to a complete stop after a deputy struck the vehicle from behind and another deputy blocked him. The vehicle eventually stopped on the northbound 15 Freeway near 138. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department confirmed that shots were fired during the altercation.

“There was a fatal collision. Nothing more,” the department said in a statement.

The chase driver was taken to hospital, but details of his condition were not immediately available.

It is unclear whether any of the police officers performing the PIT maneuvers were injured.

At least one northbound lane remained closed near Highway 138 early Tuesday.

Details about the armed robbery that led to the chase were not available.
